Bats & Butterflies
This morning as I arrived home from my run, a butterfly landed on my nose (I will confess that this photo isn’t quite real – unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough to take one).
With the arrival of the warm weather, we have an influx of butterflies and bats in the area. When I say influx, I mean hundreds, perhaps thousands.
The stench that emanates from the bats taking over the trees at the nearby reserve and lagoon is almost unbearable. Fortunately it doesn’t reach our home but it has stopped me from walking around the lagoon, particularly at dusk.
The multitude of little butterflies that are hovering around our front door brings out a smile every time.
Bats and butterflies are both useful. They are involved in the process of pollinating plants and producing and dispersing seeds. Bats are believed to make a huge contribution to pest control – they can eat enough pests to reduce the dependence on pesticides.
I’d choose butterfly over bat any day. I certainly wouldn’t want a bat to land on my nose. But I’m learning to embrace having the bats around as I recognise that they are good for the garden.
Are there things (or even people) in your life that you know are useful but would really prefer they were not there?
What can you do to embrace them?
