I didn’t care until…..

This coming Sunday 13 October is World Thrombosis Day……
You may not have heard about this day…
You may not even have heard of this disease – other than knowing that you’re supposed to keep moving when you fly…..
You may not care………
Unfortunately, I have first-hand knowledge. I had to experience VTE myself in order to become aware of it……
And to care…..
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a disease process that includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when blood clots form in veins, usually deep inside the legs, where they may cause symptoms like pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling of the leg.
Pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs when a blood clot breaks off and moves through the veins to block blood vessels in the lungs. If the clot blocks enough blood vessels in the lungs, the person can die.
I had both DVT and PE.
I am truly grateful that I was not one of the 1 in 4 that dies from the condition.
I am extremely thankful that I am back to running, even if not competing in as many marathons as I did before.
I am particularly glad that I was able to use this pivotal moment in my life to reassess my priorities.
I am enormously appreciative of the opportunities to help others by:
💡 increasing understanding of the dangers of what I call this “hidden killer”
🔓 prompting them to consider and perhaps change the trajectory of their lives before something unforeseen happens that forces them to do so
