The highlight of the month was an interview with Reader’s House Magazine. The cherry on the top was receiving their Award of Literary Excellence – In recognition of exceptional contributions to the world of literature and unwavering dedication to the craft of writing. Thanks Reader’s House!

A trip to Port Macquarie to look at property turned out to be more exciting than expected. The gruelling Ironman event was in town. As if swimming 3.9km, cycling 180km and running a full marathon (42.2km) is not enough to contend with, the weekend was very wet! Kudos to all the competitors – I hope they are still celebrating the amazing achievement.
A week in Sydney for work and social commitments was eventful and productive. Despite the ongoing rain, we managed a day at Manly Beach under perfect blue skies.
Volunteering at the Brisbane Kokoda Challenge (deemed Australia’s toughest team endurance event) was fun. I was in my happy place encouraging hundreds of people of all ages and capabilities to tackle a challenge that many of them would not have imagined possible.

*Party – Celebrate Success at Every Step*
I was speaking to a client recently and he had just achieved a significant milestone in his small business. He didn’t seem to share my level of enthusiasm about what he had done. He was feeling the need to do more, that what he’d done was not enough.
I empathised with his dilemma. We live in a performance culture where meeting goals is not sufficient, and where there is always a need to exceed them.
I spent my young life competing with two older brothers, having to run faster and jump higher than them. Every time I reached my goal, I moved the finish line. This is the sign of a high achiever. That’s a good thing? Perhaps….but not always. It can be extremely demotivating. To yourself and others. As human beings we thrive on affirmation – some more than others. That means learning to affirm ourselves and others.
Having spent much of my career managing projects, milestones are a common word in my vocabulary. Milestones are good as they provide a common purpose, giving something for us to work towards. They also provide an opportunity for celebration. A chance to pause, step back and say yes, job well done.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t look forward. I’m all for pushing boundaries, and I love encouraging people to achieve more than they dream possible. But I also believe there’s a power in the celebration of what has been achieved that will motivate people to excel. Affirmation is a better motivator than a stick.
We can use the momentum we build from the celebration to propel us forward to the challenges of the future.
What have you achieved this month that you can celebrate, big or small? How can you harness the momentum to propel you forward to the next goal?
Is there someone you can affirm or celebrate with on the achievement of one or more of their milestones?
