Firenze Half Marathon 10 April 2022
The Florence Half Marathon was held shortly after we arrived in Florence. We were hoping to run but trying to enter ran into problems with the registration system wanting Italian club registration or a special athletic doctor’s certificate. In theory, our Athletics Australia membership is suppose to be all we need…we could not find a way, so gave up.
It was a beautiful blue sky morning, although cold at 4 degrees. We took the opportunity to visit a café run by ex Australians which was also on the route being run.
Glenda had a nice big stack of ricotta pancakes whilst Walter enjoyed a nice eggs benedict. Whilst we prefer Italian coffee, we had to order a flat white for nostalgia if for no other reason.
It was great seeing a reasonably large field of runners with just under 2000 people finishing. From our table we were able to see the runners coming past. Being a 2 lap race, we got to see them twice. It was nice to see so many people out and about running and also great to see a large number of supporters out along the route.
We took a walk to the end to see the winner coming in. Whilst the world record is just under 58 minutes, a time of 1h04 was a very good effort for a slightly challenging course.
Here is a link to a short video we filmed on the course and at the finish – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqn7-d_uso8
Maybe next year we will have an opportunity to run.
