Larapinta Trail Day 13: Section 11a: Finke River – Rocky Bar Gap (15km)
Itinerary
Once we set off from the Finke River, we really start to feel our progression towards Mt Sonder, with each kilometre walked revealing closer views of this elegant desert peak. The wild flowers on this section are particularly beautiful and the giant River Red Gums stand tall and strong. Our second to last climb on the official trail is the well named Hill Top Lookout. From here we can fully appreciate our final challenge and look back towards where our journey began.
Day 13 15km/7hr walk
Glenda’s thoughts
Although we’d missed the eclipse the night before, we awoke to clear skies (cold!!) with a gorgeous moon visible setting behind the mountains.
After getting our morning ablutions out of the way, we headed off. The walk was directly out of camp this morning, following the sand and rocks of the Finke river before turning left…….
Oops, we went rogue today and led our guide on a wild goose chase! Sorry Adam……
As we made our way yet closer to Mt Sonder, we had to find our way across a couple of waterways – thanks to Walter & Adam, we managed to do so without getting wet.
It was exciting to see Mt Sonder getting closer and closer….
Plenty of bonus km today, giving us more than 18km for the day’s effort.
